The Minnesota River Assessment Project Report: Executive Summary

Minnesota Pollution Control Agency

Providing a summary of the Minnesota River Assessment Project, this publication includes a brief background of the study, river issues addressed (such as water quality and pollutants), study results, conclusions, and recommendations. The full report consists of four volumes.

Executive Summary

Minnestoa River Assessment Project Report: Physical and Chemical Assessment

Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
This second volume of the Minnesota River Assessment Project Report contains five sections. The first reports on sampling conducted on the river, ten tributaries, and twenty-one springs to determine sources and transport of sediment, nutrients, and oxygen-demanding substances. The second provides a hydrogeologic overview of the river basin, evaluates spring and groundwater contributions, and identifies human-impacted springs and groundwater systems.

Minnesota River Assessment Project Report: Biological and Toxicological Assessment

Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
In order to determine realistic recommendations for river cleanup activities, this component of the Minnesota River Assessment Project was designed to assess current condition in the Minnesota River and its tributaries. The three categories of study were: physical (habitat), chemical/toxicological (water, sediment, and toxicological), and biological (fish, macroinverterbrate, and diatom communities).

Minnesota River Basin Information Document

Senjem, Norman
This document provides a broad overview of basin planning and management in the Minnesota River Basin. In addition to information on the basin management process and its potential role in improving water quality, extensive background is provided on: the river basin (e.g., physical characteristics, origins, tributaries, and wetlands), impacts of historical settlement (e.g., agriculture, drainage), current land use trends, major watersheds, ecoregions, water resources, monitoring, water pollution sources, and environmentally sensitive and culturally significant areas.

Minnesota River Basin Report

Southern Minnesota River Basin Commission
This report provides the results from a study of the Minnesota River Basin conducted for the purposes of water and land-resource planning. Information is provided on environmental setting (location, climate, geology, land use, water resources, and wildlife), economic development (industry, population, and transportation), land and water-resource problems and needs (such as erosion, floodwater, and pollution), resource-development potential, projects and programs and development alternatives.

A Fish and Wildlife Survey of the Minnesota River Near New Ulm

Huber, Earl
This survey report examines an area proposed for dam and reservoir development by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It describes the project area (physiography, hydrography, climatology, hydrology, land use, and commercial features), its fish and wildlife resources, and the probable effect of the project on fish and wildlife. The recommendation is made to explore alternatives because of the potential for damage to habitat and increase in erosion. Maps depicting marsh types are appended.

Biological Survery of the Minnesota River

Kirsch, Nancy A.
This report contains the results of a stream survey, conducted during the summers from 1978 to 1982, to collect baseline data on the fish and wildlife resources of the Minnesota River. It includes a description of the physical characteristics of the river watershed, water quality, water uses, aquatic and terrestrial vegetation, wildlife fisheries, and invertebrates. Study conclusions presented include the exacerbation of stream-bank erosion by agricultural encroachment. Recommendations offered include the implementation and enforcement of appropriate land-use practices.

Minnesota River Resource Analysis

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources-Wild and Scenic Rivers Program
The results of this resource study led the Department of Natural Resources to conclude in 1979 that the Minnesota River "possesses outstanding scenic, natural, scientific, historical and recreational characteristics" (p.4). the study report includes sections on the river's geology, watershed, landform and soils, water quality, vegetation, fish and mollusks, wildlife, recreation, archaeology, population, economy, and history.

The Minnesota River: Report to the Upper Mississippi River Reservoir and Minnesota River Valley Development Interim Commission

Minnesota Department of Conservation
The Upper Mississippi Reservoir and Minnesota River Valley Development Commission was established by the Minnesota State Legislature to consider the issue of development in the valley. Designed to provide information to the Commission, this report addresses flood, irrigation, recreational, economic, and development problems in the Minnesota River Valley. Appendices include a table of river discharges at Mankato from 1903-1957, a bibliography, and a brief list of public agencies that influenced the Minnesota River as of 1960.
