Blue Earth River Subbasin: Study Area 1 of the Minnesota River Basin Portion of the Southern Minnesota Rivers Basin Study

U.S. Department of Agriculture
This inventory report was intended to provide data and investigation results on the Blue Earth River subbasin as an interim step toward a comprehensive environmental conservation and development plan for the Southern Minnesota Rivers Basin. The information is described by the authors as "preliminary and incomplete," and was meant to be corrected and expanded by future efforts.

A Study of the Invertebrates of the Blue Earth River System

Chelberg, Dale A
This article reports on the results of a study to determine the species composition and distribution of major invertebrates (clams, snails, and larger crustaceans) in the Blue Earth River system, a major tributary of the Minnesota River. Most significant in the findings, only eleven species remained of the twenty-one species of clams historically found in this river; of these eleven, only three were still common. Included with the article are distribution maps for two of the mussel types studied.

Biological Survey of the East Branch of the Chippewa River Watershed: Pope, Swift, Kandiyohi, Douglas Counties

Larson , Gerald W
Reporting on the results of a survey of the east branch of the Chippewa River, a major tributary of the Minnesota River, this document includes a description of the watershed (e.g., physical features, climate, and economic factors), land use (uplands, wetlands, and land ownership), and survey methodology. Results cover the classification of lakes and wetlands, water chemistry, fish and fish lakes, and wildlife habitat and hunting. Descriptions of wetland types and survey data on lakes are appended.

Biological Survey of the West Branch of the Chippewa River, Pope, Stevens, Swift, Douglas, Grant and Ottertail Counties

Larson , Gerald W
Reporting on the results of a survey of the west branch of the Chippewa River, a major tributary of the Minnesota River, this document includes a description of the watershed (e.g., physical features, climate, and economic factors), land use (uplands, wetlands, and land ownership), and survey methodology. Results cover the classification of lakes and wetlands, water chemistry, fish and fish lakes, and wildlife habitat and hunting. Descriptions of wetland types and survey data on lakes are appended.

A Biological Rport on the Upper Watonwan River Watershed: Cottonwood, Watonwan, and Brown Counties

Nelson, Roy D.
Providing information on watershed conditions and wildlife habitation within the Upper Watonwan watershed, this report contains brief descriptions of topography, soils, scale, climate, and land use, as well as a more extensive section of fishery and wildlife habitat, population, and hunter use. It offers recommendations for fishery and wildlife management in relation to the use of retention sites and channeling for flood control.

Overall Plan: Upper Minnesota River Watershed District in Parts of Big Stone, Lac Qui Parle, Stevens, Swift and Traverse Counties

Dingels, Stephen
This revised overall watershed-resource management plan for the Upper Minnesota Watershed District, encompassing the headwaters of the Minnesota River at Big Stone Lake, includes watershed information such as topography, soils, wetlands, wildlife, water quality, water use and classification, and floods. Demographic data cover economy, population, land use, transportation, utilities, drainage, and irrigation. Watershed management activities are described, including flood and erosion control and the restoration of Big Stone Lake.

Water Resource Inventory of the Lower Minnesota River Watershed District

Itasca Engineering, Inc.
Produced to provide background information for a revised overall plan for the Lower Minnesota River Watershed District, this report includes detailed sections on the watershed's lakes and streams; specific pollution problems (e.g., sewage, landfill, and agricultural); ground and surface water; hydrologic conditions; flooding; and recreational, industrial, and public aspects. Each section provides recommendations for future action; recommendations are also categorized by the agency or group that would find them of interest. Numerous maps and charts illustrate the text.

The Warren: A Truly Forgotten River

Wilkinson , Drew
This provocative report challenges basic assumptions regarding the current water-quality problems of the Minnesota River and the factors that contribute to those problems. The River Warren Research Committee (RWRC) proposes that the major river pollutant is silt (soil) deposited in the river, not from agricultural runoff, but as a result of conditions created when the Glacial River Warren flowed through the region.

The Minnesota River: A Biological Reconnaissance of the Minnesota River from Lac Qui Parle Dam to Mankato

Schneider, James A
This survey of the upper Minnesota River was conducted to collect, analyze, and record information on physical, chemical, and biological conditions to provide the basis for fish and game management and to evaluate recreation potential. This was the first fish and game survey of this section of the Minnesota River. The report includes descriptions of the watershed and river (e.g., glacial history, dams, and water quality), fish spawning and history of fisheries management, commercial fishing, recreation, pollution, and fish.

Biological Monitoring in the Minnesota River Basin: 1995-96

Zischke, J.A.
This report presents the results of biological monitoring conducted at seven sites on small streams in the Minnesota River Basin during 1994, 1995, and 1996 as part of the Minnesota River Improvement Project, whose goals are to improve water quality and biota through best management practices. Monitoring included assessment of riparian and instream habitat, physical and chemical measurements, and macroinvertebrate sampling. Results reported include habitat-quality assessments and macroinvertebrate analyses, but there is not a great deal of detail provided.
