History of the Minnesota Valley: Including the Explorers and Pioneers of Minnesota and History of the Sioux Massacre

Neill, Rve. Edward D.
This extensive volume on the history of the Minnesota Valley includes sections by Edward Neill on the early explorers of Minnesota (Nicollet, Menard, Marquette, and Perrot, among others); the founding of the state; and the early history of the valley, including explorations of the Minnesota River, interactions among explorers, traders and local Indians, and steamboat navigation. In a section on the geological makeup of the Minnesota Valley, N.H. Winchell briefly summarizes the results of two earlier surveys, conducted in 1848 and 1865, of the distribution of various geologic types.

Minnesota's Rocks and Waters: A Geological Story

Schwatz, George M
This book on the major geological features of the state of Minnesota was designed for a general readership. Part I examines the state as a whole, looking at topography, rivers and lakes, minerals and rocks, prehistoric geological history, and mineral resources. Part II focuses on various regions, including the Minnesota River Valley. The authors discuss the geological history of the valley and its rock formations.

Geology of Minnesota: A Centennial Volume

Sims, P.K.
This extensive volume, published on the 100th anniversary of the Minnesota Geological Survey, was intended to summarize knowledge (as of 1972) of the geology of Minnesota. Organized by historical periods (Early Precambrian, middle Precambrian, late Precambrian, Paleozoic and Mesozoic, and Cenozoic), most sections include an article focusing on the geology of the Minnesota River Valley region.

The Minnesota Valley in the Ice Age

Upham, Warren
Written by an assistant on the Geological and Natural History survey of Minnesota, this paper discusses the geological origins of the Minnesota River Valley. After providing a general view of the modern-day makeup of the valley (e.g., rock formations, bluffs, and tributaries), the author explores in more depth its condition during and after the Ice Age.

A Plan for Recreational Trails in the Minnesota River Valley

Itasca Engineering, Inc.
This preliminary engineering feasibility report for a system of recreational trails in the Minnesota River Valley from Fort Snelling to Le Sueur. Following a brief summary of considerations and a description of phases of trail development, the report consists of a series of river maps depicting the following: land use, recreational facilities s and historical units, land values and flood plain, and phases I-VI of trail development.

A Survey and Analysis of 24 Rivers in Minnesota: For the Purpose of Recommending Those Which Should be Considered as the Minnesota Recreational River System

Midwest Planning and Research, Inc., and St. Paul Office of U.S.G.S.
This survey of twenty-four Minnesota rivers, including the Minnesota, was conducted to determine physical characteristics and eligibility for inclusion in a state recreational river system. The study recommended that the Minnesota not be included in the system because the degree of development along its banks removed it from wilderness-river consideration and the nature of its flow meant that it is only intermittently canoeable.

Analysis of the Minnesota River Valley Trail

Minnesota State Planning Agency
The report contains recommendations on location, dimension, and types of trails for the Minnesota River Valley trail system along the lower river. Part I includes brief descriptions of the physical character of the valley and its history. Previous recreation proposals for the trail system are reviewed in detail, as well as existing trail program (especially the status of land acquisition) at the time of publication.

Overall Plan: Lac Qui Parle-Yellow Bank Watershed District In Parts of Lac Qui Parle, Lincoln, and Yellow Medicine Counties

Lac Qui Parle-Yellow Bank Watershed District
This overall plan was designed to provide a basis for the conservation, preservation, and development of water resources in the Lac Qui Parle-Yellow Bank Watershed District. The plan includes a description of the district (e.g., location, geology, and sub-watersheds), district objectives, watershed problems and plans for solution (e.g., flood control, drainage, and water quality), and the policy under which works of improvement are pursued. Various maps are appended.

Yellow Medicine River Watershed: Recommendations for Streamflow and Habitat Protection

Terry, Karen
This report presents recommendations for streamflow and habitat protection for the Yellow Medicine River watershed, as part of the Minnesota department of Natural Resources Stream Habitat Program. It includes a watershed profile (general characteristics, hydrology, and resource values), study methodology (site and transect selection, field data, and computer modeling), resulting and discussion, restoration opportunities, and conclusions. The report is quite technical, including numerous charts and graphs.

Interim Strategy to Reduce Nonpoint Source Pollution to the Minnesota River

Frost, Jack
This report contains an interim strategy to address nonpoint-source pollution of the Minnesota River from urban development and agriculture. The nine-point plan was intended to enable local governments and watershed-management organizations to take immediate action towards achieving the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency goal of a 40 percent reduction in nonpoint-source pollution, such as watershed-planning legislation and the Board of Soil and Water Resources.
