MINNESOTA RIVER BASIN DATA CENTER

Lake Shaokatan Restoration Project, Phase I - Diagnostic (CWP)

Minor watershed number(s):   25147

The project area is the Lake Shaokatan lakeshed which is located in minor watershed 25147 in the Hawk Creek-Yellow Medicine River Major Watershed.

The Lake Shaokatan Restoration Project was a Phase I - Diagnostic, MPCA Clean Water Partnership Project funded in 1990 and completed in 1993. This diagnostic study, sponsored by the Yellow Medicine River Watershed District in cooperation with the Lincoln County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), Shaokatan Lakeshore Association, Verdi Sportsman Club, Lincoln County, Shaokatan Sportsman Club, Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), has the purpose to study the physical, biological and chemical dynamics of the lake and determine realistic management goals for reducing phosphorus loading to the lake.

Other

Data Summary Lake Shaokatan Restoration Project Phase I-Diagnostic (CWP) includes data from a lake sediment study completed by the Limnological Research Center of the University of Minnesota in 1992. The purpose of this study was to the further understanding of how changing land use practices have historically impacted eutrophication processes in the lake.

Surface Water Quality Monitoring

Data Summary Lake Shaokatan Restoration Project, Phase I - Diagnostic (CWP) includes in-lake and watershed water quality data from monitoring during the1991-1993 sampling seasons. Sampling accomplished with automated and grab samples collected during baseline and storm event conditions with in-lake samples collected from two lake sampling sites. Analysis of collected samples include ortho-phosphorus, total phosphorus, nitrate/nitrite-nitrogen, ammonia, total kjeldahl nitrogen, chlorophyll-a, pH, temperature, turbidity, conductivity, alkalinity, sulfate, silica, iron, manganese, total suspended solids, and algae/zooplankton. Analysis for watershed samples collected from ten sampling sites include ortho-phosphorus, total phosphorus, nitrate/nitrite-nitrogen, ammonia, total kjeldahl nitrogen, turbidity, conductivity, alkalinity, pH, and total suspended solids.
