Minor watershed number(s): 31058
This project area is minor watershed 31058, located within the Watonwan River Major Watershed.
The Mountain Lake Project was a Phase I - Diagnostic, MPCA Clean Water Partnership Project. This two-year diagnostic study was initiated in 1990 and completed in 1991. The goals of this diagnostic study is to 1) characterize and quantify the sources contributing to water quality degradation, 2) develop numerical water quality goals for the lake, and 3) develop a watershed-wide water quality management plan based on numerical goals. Contributors to this diagnostic study include: Mountain Lake Commission, Mountain Lake Association, City of Mountain Lake, Mountain Lake Sportsman's Club, Citizens of the Mountain Lake watershed, Cottonwood County SWCD and Environmental Services, MN Department of Natural Resources (DNR), MN-Extension, and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).

On Site Septic Systems
Data Summary |
Mountain Lake Project, Phase I - Diagnostic (CWP) includes data from surveys of subsurface flow and septic leaching performed by the MPCA in August of 1990 and May of 1991. Dye testing of on-site septic systems occurred on a voluntary basis. Sources of septic leaching were identified, mapped, and photographed. Collection of water quality samples occurred near sources of dye and analyzed for total coliform bacteria, total fecal coliform bacteria, total phosphorus, and orhto-phosphorus. |

Precipitation Monitoring
Data Summary |
Mountain Lake Project, Phase I - Diagnostic (CWP) received precipitation data from the Minnesota State Climatology Office. The Lake Improvement Commission provided supplemental data by maintaining three additional daily precipitation recording stations in the watershed. |

Surface Water Quality Monitoring
Data Summary |
Mountain Lake Project, Phase I - Diagnostic (CWP) includes surface water quality data collected from two in-lake sites, seven stream sites, and one storm sewer site between May 1990 and September 1991. Analysis includes the following parameters: pH, Alkalinity, Total Phosphorus (TP), Ortho-Phosphorus, Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), Nitrate/Nitrite-Nitrogen, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Chlorophyll-a, Pheophytin-a, Phytoplankton, Algal Biovolume, Zooplankton, Total Coliform Bacteria (TC) and Total Fecal Coliform Bacteria (TFC). Collection of stream water quality samples occurred during baseline flow conditions and storm events using automated samplers and analyzed for TP, Ortho-phosphorus, TKN, Nitrate/Nitrite-Nitrogen, Ammonia-Nitrogen, and TSS. Collection of storm sewer discharge water quality samples occurred during three events and analyzed for TP, Ortho-phosphorus, and TSS. |

Watershed Assessment
Data Summary |
Mountain Lake Project, Phase I - Diagnostic (CWP) includes data from a watershed assessment which utilized two computer models. The Reckow Simpson (1980) model was used to analyze lake response to phosphorus loading and the AgNPS model evaluated pollutant loading reductions of various best management practices (BMPs). |
