Analysis of additional sites occurred along the main stem and tributaries of the Minnesota River. The Biological and Toxicological Assessment component of the Minnesota River Assessment Project (MRAP) includes studies which assist in defining existing conditions in the Minnesota River and it's tributaries. This analysis of benthic macroinvertabrate communities is completed as a part of the Biological and Toxicological Assessment component of the Minnesota River Assessment Project (MRAP). The study assesses the status of benthic macroinvertebrate communities within the Minnesota River Basin. These communities serve as effective monitors of environmental conditions and are useful in the assessment of stream quality. The channels sampled ranged widely in size and riparian and instream characteristics over the 41 selected assessment sites. Using the Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI) of the Ohio EPA (1987), physical habitat characteristics at each of the 41 sites was determined. Sampling was performed each summer from 1989-1992. |
