Beardsley Ground Water Study, Phase I - Diagnostic (CWP)

Minor watershed number(s):   22034, 22037, 22045, 22046, 22047, 22049, 22053

The project area is located in the Upper Minnesota River Major Watershed within Big Stone and Traverse Counties and includes the following minor watersheds: 22034, 22037, 22045, 22046, 22047, 22049 and 22053.

The Beardsley Ground Water Study was a Phase I - Diagnostic, MPCA Clean Water Partnership Project . The purpose of this project was to study select ground water characteristics in the designated project area near Beardsley, Minnesota. The project area was divided into two study areas. Together, they were located to the south and west of Beardsley, Minnesota to Big Stone Lake and south along the Lake to Ortonville. The project area included portions of minor watersheds 22034, 22037, 22045, 22046, 22047, 22049 and 22053. Most diagnostic activities for this project took place from 1991-1992. Project participants included the Upper Minnesota River Watershed District, Big Stone County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), the University of Minnesota (Morris Geology Department), and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). The two main goals of this project were to determine if phosphorus in ground water and water from springs was contributing to nutrient loading of Big Stone Lake and to determine if wells previously noted for high nitrate concentrations were still high. These goals were accomplished through water quality monitoring, watershed assessment, and data analysis and assessment.

Ground Water Monitoring

Data Summary Beardsley Ground Water Study Phase I - Diagnostic (CWP) includes data from the sampling of eight monitoring and five domestic wells in the northern study area in 1991. Each well was sampled four times for nitrate and other parameters such as coliform bacteria. Water level was also measured in the eight monitoring wells. Sampling occurred three times for ten domestic wells and five springs located in the southern study area. Analysis of the well samples included total phosphorus and nitrate and spring samples included total and dissolved phosphorus.
