Trapper's Run Watershed Project

Minor watershed number(s):   26009

The project area is the Trapper's Run subshed of the Pelican Lake minor watershed 26009 which is located within the Chippewa River Major Watershed.

The Trapper’s Run Watershed Project, a diagnostic study and implementation plan, is a cooperative effort of Pope County, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Area Fisheries, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and local citizens. The purpose of the Trapper’s Run Watershed Project is to investigate poor water quality conditions in Trapper’s Run Creek and offer solutions to improve it. Elements of this project include water quality monitoring, feedlot inventory, septic inventory, fish and vegetative survey, and restorable wetland inventory. Pope County is in the process of revising this study to qualify as a MPCA, Clean Water Partnership Phase I-Diagnostic study.

Biological Monitoring

Data Summary Trapper's Run Watershed Project included the following: an invertebrate community assessment of Trapper's Run Creek (1994), a fish survey of Trapper's Run Creek (1994), and vegetative sampling of two lakes in the Trapper's Run Watershed (1994 and 1995).

Drainage

Data Summary Trapper's Run Watershed Project includes data from an open ditch and tile inventory of the Trapper's Run Watershed performed by Pope County in 1995. Data collected through personal interviews with land owner/operators who were asked to draw tile information on aerial photos, was used to create a composite map of open ditch and tile in the Trapper's Run Watershed.

Surface Water Quality Monitoring

Data Summary Trapper's Run Watershed Project includes surface water quality data from monitoring during the 1994 and 1995 sampling seasons. Water chemistry data collected from 11 baseline flow sampling sites in 1994 and 1995 included 11 additional storm event sampling sites added in 1995. Analysis included total phosphorus, ortho phosphorus, ammonia-nitrogen, fecal coliform, total suspended solids, biological oxygen demand, chlorophyll-a. Analysis including temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and conductivity are taken with the field sample collections.

Watershed Assessment

Data Summary Trapper's Run Watershed Project includes data from a watershed assessment of eight sub-watersheds completed in 1996. The sub-watersheds were delineated within the Trapper's Run watershed using data from the open ditch and tile inventory. Each subwatershed was then evaluated and compared according to the number and type of feedlots present, number of animal units present, number of wetlands/farmed wetlands, number of noncode septic systems, and its water quality condition.
