The Biological and Toxicological Assessment component of the Minnesota River Assessment Project (MRAP) includes studies which assist in defining existing conditions in the Minnesota River and it's tributaries. This fish community analysis is completed as a part of the Biological and Toxicological Assessment component of the Minnesota River Assessment Project (MRAP). The study adapts and calibrates the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) for application in the basin; evaluates stream quality using IBI within select minor watersheds; and assesses the biological conditions of the Redwood River and Blue Earth River Watersheds using the IBI. Fish communities are analyzed at 116 sites along the Minnesota River mainstem and tributaries, and within select minor watersheds. Sampling took place from June to October in the years 1990, 1991, and 1992. Physical habitat characteristics were determined for each of the 116 sites using the Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI) of the Ohio EPA (1987).




Biological Monitoring

Data Summary MRAP Biological and Toxicological Assessment - A Fish Community Analysis of the Minnesota River Basin includes data from fish community surveys performed at each site to determine the Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI). Scatter plots and correlation analysis were used to examine relationships between IBI and QHEI for groups of sites.
