First Day Hike

Friday, January 1, 2016
10:00 AM

Start off the New Year with a First Day Hike and a chance to view the winter landscape on January 1st (Friday) at 10 a.m. The Minneopa Area naturalist will lead a guided hike from the Group Campground along the Minnesota River Bluff Trail to talk about bison.

Established in 1905, Minneopa is the third oldest state park in Minnesota and features a scenic double waterfall as the creek drops almost 40 feet.  In the fall of 2015 the Minnesota DNR re-established a bison herd at Minneopa State Park.  This is part of the Minnesota Bison Conservation Herd effort to preserve, perpetuate and interpret the natural features that existed in the area of the park prior to settlement.

America’s State Parks First Day Hikes offer individuals and families an opportunity to begin the New Year rejuvenating and connecting with the outdoors by taking a healthy hike on January 1, 2016 at a state park.  For more information, http://www.americasstateparks.org/first-day-hikes

To participate in the First Day Hike, meet at the Group Campground on the Campground side of Minneopa State Park at 10:00 a.m.  Wear shoes and clothing appropriate for walking on a winter morning.  Be prepared for slippery and uneven walking conditions.  The hike will last approximately two hours and cover around 3 miles.  Depending on snow conditions you may want to bring a pair of snowshoes.
