Wetlands Increase to 1,561 Acres

In 2003:

  • Wetland acres increased to approximately 1,561 due to efforts by the Seven Mile Creek Clean Water Partnership Project to restore an additional 128 acres; the restoration was funded through the CRP-based Farmable Wetlands Program;
  • An adjacent drainage tile was routed into the wetlands to improve water quality and to hold back water;
  • Talks to improve County Ditch (CD) 29 increased; and
  • Overson Lake was targeted for potential restoration to offset drainage improvements to CD 29.

In 2004:

  • Landowners and farmers proposed improvements to drainage of the old, undersized CD 29 system; and
  • Talks began between watershed project managers and petitioners to offset any increase in peak flow in Seven Mile Creek by stabilizing the downstream bank near CD 13 and Highway 99, as well as possibly restoring Overson Lake to a wetland. Next
