  By 1985:
  • Only approximately 1,307 wetland acres remained;
  • A total of 4,556 acres of wetlands were drained and converted to cropland from 1938-1985. This represents an average annual net loss of about 100 acres per year during this period;
  • Overson Lake was gone; however
  • The 1985 Federal Farm Bill passed, with provisions to set aside land in the Conservation Reserve Program; and
  • Actions to reduce wetland losses through Swampbuster were enacted. Next
