First Public Drainage Systems Installed

  • To make the land more suitable for farming, excess water was managed by installing drainage ditches and underground tiles. The first public drainage system, County Ditch (CD) 6, was installed in 1889 in the northeast portion of the watershed (scroll over the map for its location; read more about drain tiles.)
  • In 1917 and 1918, the first public tile was installed. In 1917 and 1918, CD tile 58 and CD tile 29 were hand dug to drain farmland (scroll over the map for locations).
  • The early 20th century photos at the left show how early pioneers installed the drainage systems (1912-1913, LeSueur County). Next
