Shakopee Creek Headwaters Project

Minor watershed number(s):   26042, 26047

The study area includes minor watersheds 26042 and 26047 which are located in the Chippewa River Major Watershed.

The Shakopee Creek Headwaters Project is a locally based effort to cooperatively monitor and identify sources of polluted run-off in the Shakopee Creek Headwaters Watershed and to promote conservation practices which target water quality improvement and flood reduction through education and incentive-based programs. Planning for this project began in 1994, after the MPCA completed a Lake Assessment Report on Games and Norway Lakes which indicated a need for more information characterizing watershed nutrient inputs into the lakes. The study area is comprised of 48.6 square miles of land located upstream of the Lake Andrew Dam. Partners in the Shakopee Creek Headwaters Project include: Landowners in the Shakopee Creek Headwaters Watershed, Norway and Games Lake Lakes Association, Lake Andrew Association, Kandiyohi County, Kandiyohi Soil and Water Conservation District, Chippewa River Watershed Project, MN Department of Natural Resources, MN Pollution Control Agency, US Fish and Wildlife, Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Land Stewardship Project. The diagnostic phase of this project was completed in the fall of 1998. A report of the findings is currently in development.
