Upper Cannon River Watershed

Introduction
The findings section is going to be in constant construction over the next few months, adding more data
and eventually adding a finished discussion and conclusion section. It is important to take your time
while looking at the data. These were all field-scale research sites located in several counties in
southern Minnesota, and with different locations, there were many variables that are being accounted
for, such as precipitation, soils, location and land management. Reserach site locations and owner
names are confidential and are not available. There is already a good amount of information on this
site and if you have any questions please contact us at 507-389-5492.

2008 Final Data Table Summary:
With G1, 2 and 4 equipped with automated samplers, we were able to catch the entire events. The
averages and maximum concentrations for TSS, TP, OP and E. coli are higher because of this than the
averages and maximum concentrations for G3 and Y, B and R sites. G3 and Y1 have higher NO2+NO3
averages and that is due to a drained wetland. The remaining sites will show very low E coli, TSS, TP, OP
average concentrations, and what most expect in tile drainage water for NO2+NO3 concentrations.  Sites
R2-R5 is MDA’s Hwy90 sites.  R3 and R4 have different nutrient management plans than R2 and R5.

2009 Final Data Table Summary:
The biggest problem with 2009 data was the lack of precipitation.  2009 had a dry growing season, and
the majority of the samples were collected with the snow melt and early precipitation or during
October’s rain events.  2009 data is much like 2008, with the same research sites, G1, 2 and 4, having
the highest E. coli, TSS, TP, and OP averages and maximums.  And again R3 and R4 also had higher TP
and OP number than R2 and R5.

2010 Final Data Table Summary:
2010 was a very good year for tile drainage research.  There was a good snow melt and then almost
constant storms throughout the growing season.  Sites G1 and G2 again had some of the highest E. coli,
TSS, TP, and OP averages and maximums for the entire year.  As mentioned before in the 2008
summary, Y1 had the highest NO2+NO3 average and maximum due to tile lines running through a
drained wetland, every sample from 2008-2010 was yellow.  However, unlike the two years before, G1
and G2 weren’t the only research sites that had above average nutrient and E. coli averages and
maximums.   Sites such as B3, which is a no manure field with open intakes; Y1, manured field and no
open intakes, and sites K1-K4, where the overland flow was sampled and had very high E. coli averages
and sample maximums for sites where no manure has been applied since 1991.  The explanations for
these results are still being determined.  Once that is complete, this will be updated.

*Indicates grab sample data only for the entire sampling season ** Indicates a site location with dual information, overland and tile drainage data. In 2009 and 2010 the data is monitored seperately.

Event Based Sample Table Summary:
The purpose of these tables was to show what date the event occurred, the number of samples
collected for that event and the result averages.  These tables were also meant to help explain the
results by showing during what time of year did sample concentrations for certain nutrients and E. coli
increase.
