The Yellow Medicine River Watershed is part of the Hawk Creek-Yellow Medicine River Major Watershed which is south and west of the Minnesota River. The project area includes all minor watersheds within the Yellow Medicine River Watershed and lies within these counties: Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Redwood, and Yellow Medicine.

The Greater Yellow Medicine River Project was a Phase I - Diagnostic, MPCA Clean Water Partnership Project. The project was funded in 1998 and is sponsored by the Yellow Medicine River Watershed District. Contributing sponsors include: City of Minneota, City of Hanley Falls, City of Cottonwood, City of Ivanhoe, City of Porter, Lake Stay Township, Osh Kosh Township, Lincoln County Task Force, US Geologic Survey, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Lincoln County Soil and Water Conservation District, Lyon Soil and Water Conservation District, Area II, Department of Natural Resources, and the Natural Resource Conservation Service. The purpose of this project is to further the understanding of how land use practices within the watershed are affecting river water quality. There are no data to report at this stage of the Diagnostic Study.
