Area Location and Definition:

The project area includes three sites on the Pomme de Terre River (watershed #23) in Stevens County. The first two sites are in Darnen Township, NE 1/4 of sections 13 and 23. The third site is in Horton Township, NE 1/4 section 10. All three project sites are zero distance from the Pomme de Terre River.

Project Description:

The Rock Vane Streambank Protection Project potentially stops or reduces stream bank erosion on the Pomme de Terre River at three sites in Stevens County. The undercut streambanks are eroding directly into the Pomme de Terre River channel, having a direct impact on the water quality of the river. Causes include flooding, loss of vegetation, and changes in the watershed hydrology. An inventory of bank erosion sites on the Pomme de Terre River was conducted during the flooding of 1993 by Stevens Environmental Services and Stevens SWCD. The three rock vane sites are to be installed in the year 2000, two of which are adjacent to major roads. Overall project coordination will be performed by Stevens SWCD with additional technical assistance from the MRBJPB engineering staff and the NRCS Area Office. Visual inspection of the sites will be performed at least once a year by Stevens SWCD.
