Placement and Timing of Application (B)

Best Management Practice Area:
Fertilizer Use Efficiencies

In the new (2012) 590 standard the NRCS adopted the 4Rs of nutrient management being, the Right source, Right rate, Right time and Right place for plant nutrient application. The timing of nutrient application is a critical component of nutrient management. The method by which nutrients are applied to a field can greatly affect the mobility of those nutrients. In general, carefully placing fertilizer and incorporating the fertilizer into the soil profile is the best management practice.
