MRBDC Lake Hanska - Lake Assessment Program

MINNESOTA RIVER BASIN DATA CENTER

Lake Hanska - Lake Assessment Program

Minor watershed number(s):   31041, 31043, 31053

The project area was the Lake Hanska lakeshed which includes minor watersheds 31041, 31043, and 31053. These minor watersheds are located in the Watonwan River Major Watershed.

The Lake Hanska project was completed through the MPCA - Lake Assessment Program (LAP) in 1992. A LAP report includes general information about a lake's trophic status, factors (such as land cover/land use or point source pollution potential) affecting nutrient input to the lake, fisheries health, water quality, historical trend analysis, and watershed assessment modeling.

Surface Water Quality Monitoring

Data Summary Lake Hanska - Lake Assessment Project (LAP) includes surface water quality data collected five times at four in-lake sites during the 1992 sampling season. Analysis includes total phosphorus, total kjeldahl nitrogen, nitrate-nitrite nitrogen, suspended solids, alkalinity, chloride, color, turbidity, and chlorophyll-a. The following measurements made in the field: pH, conductivity, transparency, temperature, and dissolved oxygen.

Watershed Assessment

Data Summary Lake Hanska - Lake Assessment Project (LAP) includes data from a watershed assessment which used the Minnesota Lake Eutrophication Analysis Procedure (MINLEAP) model and the Reckow and Simpson (1980) model to assess the current water quality of the lake. These models use water quality, point source pollution potential, land cover/land use, inflow and outflow data to relate the flow of water and nutrients from a lake's watershed to observed conditions in a lake.
