Big Stone Lake Restoration Project, EPA Clean Lakes Phase II - Implementation

Minor watershed number(s):   22027, 22028, 22034, 22037, 22045, 22046, 22047, 22048, 22049, 22050, 22051, 22053

The project area is the lakeshed of Big Stone Lake which is divided by the Minnesota/South Dakota state border. The Minnesota portion of the lakeshed is located in the Upper Minnesota River Major Watershed within Big Stone and Traverse Counties and includes the following minor watersheds: 22027, 22028, 22034, 22037, 22045, 22046, 22047, 22048, 22049, 22050, 22051, 22053.

This EPA Clean Lakes, Phase II - Implementation Project began in 1985 and was completed in 1992. The Big Stone Lake Restoration Project Diagnostic/Feasibility Study (completed in 1983) recommended various implementation activities to reverse cultural eutrophication of the lake and maintain its recreational potential. Project cooperators included: South Dakota Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR), Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), the Upper Minnesota River Watershed District (UMRWD), Roberts, Big Stone, and Grant County Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD), the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), the Nature Conservancy, Citizens for Big Stone Lake, and various other public and private entities. .

Best Management Practices (BMP) Focus Projects

Data Summary Big Stone Lake Restoration Project includes data concerning the implementation and promotion of the following conservation and best management practices (BMPs): no-till drilling, grassed waterways, terraces, set aside acres, streambank and shoreline stabilizations, and ag waste management systems.

Surface Water Quality Monitoring

Data Summary Big Stone Lake Restoration Project includes surface water quality data collected during baseline and storm event flow conditions at ten tributary sampling stations from 1985-1990. Seven of the ten stations were equipped with automated samplers and continuous stage recorders. Collection of grab samples occurred at other sampling sites. Collection of monthly in-lake water quality samples occurred at six lake sites from May to September (1985-1991). Analysis included nitrate/nitrite-nitrogen, ammonia, total Kjeldahl nitrogen, ortho- and total phosphorus, total suspended solids, total solids, pH, dissolved oxygen, fecal coliform bacteria, temperature and alkalinity. Analysis for in-lake water samples included these additional parameters: chlorophyll-a, algal density, total dissolved solids, transparency and specific conductivity. Dissolved oxygen was measured at the surface and bottom of all in-lake sampling locations.

Surface Water Quantity (Flow) Monitoring

Data Summary Big Stone Lake Restoration Project includes monitoring at seven of the ten tributary sampling sites with continuous stage recorders. Flow was measured at other sites with a portable velocity meter whenever sampling occurred. Lake level monitoring also occurred from 1985-1991.
