Watershed Assessment

Data Summary Lake Ballantyne - Lake Assessment Project (LAP) includes data from a watershed assessment which uses the Minnesota Lake Eutrophication Analysis Procedure (MINLEAP) model to assess changes in the quality of the lake resulting from altered nutrient inputs or altered flow. The model incorporates water quality, point source pollution potential, land cover/land use, inflow and outflow data in the assessment. Duck Lake Water Quality Improvement Project, Phase I - Diagnostic (CWP) includes data from a watershed assessment of the Duck Lake subshed of minor watershed 28033. Duck Lake - Lake Assessment Project (LAP) includes data from a watershed assessment which uses two lake water quality models, MINLEAP and Reckow and Simpson to estimated water quality based on the morphometry and watershed characteristics of Duck Lake. Lake Washington Water Quality Improvement Project, Phase I - Diagnostic (CWP) includes data from a watershed assessment completed by the MPCA using information collected by Blue Earth and Le Sueur Counties, the Water Resources Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and other contributors. MRAP Land Use Assessment - Level II includes data from an evaluation of the magnitude of nonpoint source pollution in these ten minor watersheds. The Minnesota Natural Resources Conservation Service completed this evaluation using computer models. The AGNPS (Agricultural Non-point Source Pollution Model) model is used to simulate sediment loading under present conditions, along with three sediment management alternatives (SED MGT- 1, SED MGT- 2, SED MGT- 3). The GLEAMS (Groundwater Loading Effects of Agricultural Management Systems) model is used in determining levels for present conditions and nutrient management alternatives (NUT MGT-1, NUT MGT-2) using the nutrient evaluations. Input data for Land cover/Land use originated from the Minnesota River Assessment Project (MRAP) Land Use Level III. Climate records were gathered from the closest National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Weather Station to establish a 30 year (1961-1990) annual precipitation average for each minor watershed. Evaluated minor watersheds are located within the Blue Earth, Watonwan, and Le Sueur Major Watersheds. MRAP Land Use Assessment - Level III includes data from watershed assessments completed for each minor watershed. Each assessment is composed of five steps: walking each individual watershed, conducting landowner/operator interviews, land use map development, erodible soil map development, and data base development.

Wetlands

Data Summary Blue Earth County completed a county wide wet area inventory in 1998 to identify potential wetland restoration sites. This inventory was created from 1993 aerial photos. Lake Washington Water Quality Improvement Project, Phase I - Diagnostic (CWP) includes data from drained wetlands identified in the project area in 1995. MRAP Land Use Assessment - Level III includes data from DNR designated wetlands used in the land cover/land use assessment.
