Prairie Seed Collection

Saturday, October 4, 2014
1 p.m.

The public is invited to help harvest and sort native seeds at Sakatah Lake State Park on Saturday, October 4th.

“Native seed collection is vital to restoring and expanding our prairies,” according to Dennis Reindl, park manager at Sakatah Lake State Park. “The more hands we get to help out on Saturday, the more successful we will be.”

No special experience or knowledge is needed to participate.  Reindl suggests that volunteers wear pants and long-sleeved shirts, and bring along a hat, gloves, sunscreen and a scissors or clipper.

Volunteers should meet at the prairie harvest site location on LeRoy Avenue (north from Highway 60 and east of the park entrance) at 1 p.m.  The work should be completed by about 3:30 p.m.

“The native seeds we collect on Saturday will benefit our prairies for years to come,” Reindl said.  Sakatah Lake State Park is located 14 miles west of Faribault or one mile east of Waterville, off State Highway 60.  For more information call the park at 507-362-4438.
