Steps for unzipping an ARC/INFO Export file or ArcView Shape file using WinZip

Once you get to this point, you should have a file named xxxxxx.zip in the folder you specified. Now you will learn how to extract or "unzip" the file so you can get to the individual files within the zipped file.

To download the current version of WinZip, link here.

  1. Locate the folder where you downloaded the file.
  2. Double click on the filename with the mouse. This should open up the utility WinZip which will allow you to unzip the file. The window you should see is shown in figure 1.

  3. [WinZip window]
    figure 1

  4. Notice the filenames that came along with the downloaded file are listed out. In this window you can double click on the file to view it or extract (save) the file into another folder onto your hard drive which is shown here.
  5. Highlight the file you want by clicking on it once with the mouse. This window is shown in figure 2.

  6. [Highlighted file]
    figure 2

  7. Now click on the extract button located on the top toolbar. Once you do that, the window shown in figure 3 should appear on your screen.

  8. [Extract window]

  9. Select a disk drive and folder of where you want the file to be saved to. Then click the extract button on the window. It will look like nothing has happened because the WinZip window will appear, but it saved the highlighted file to the folder you selected.
  10. Continue this process to save the rest of the files if you would like.
